rose 1. Hi, nobody knows much about Nine Covens, what are you hiding under your hoods? Who are you?
Within the popular media/music press there is always a need to over hype or over sell albums/projects on the basis of ‘who is involved’, by calling it a ‘super group’ or labelling it with ‘Featuring ex-members of..’. This is something that - for the moment - we have decided to avoid with this album. Hence we have opted to remain anonymous at this point.
This for me is not about pseudonyms or ‘war names’ but is about letting the purity, passion and message of the music speak for itself. If you don’t presuppose something about it on the basis of a ‘frame of reference’ then the tendency is to judge it, and relate to it more for what it is, rather than what you know about its creators. To that end I feel like the album speaks for us, by carrying a challenging and apt message that it is something that others can relate too in their own way.
Black metal has always been about purity, rawness and ‘otherness’, and by doing this album we nod at these qualities by providing people the opportunity to take what they will from what they have in front of them.

2. Instead of telling your names, could you describe the soul of Nine Covens?
Nine Covens came about as a result of 4 people who have strong ideas about music, about life and about the world getting together and creating a black metal album that has something real to say, rather than so many bands who are happy just to don some corpse paint and parody the black metal status quo.
We are all the driving force behind the band and contribute collectively to what it is, and what it will be. Many of us have been, or are the main songwriters in bands and have the urge to always be creative within extreme music, to the point where we are closing in on a second album, before the first one is even available.

3. Why did you choose Nine Covens as the band's name?
The Nine Covens are thought to be the only surviving covens of traditional English witchcraft to have survived to the present day and are not to be confused with a Wiccan coven. The learning of these covens forms the basis for the modern resurgence in witchcraft and neo-paganism.
Our link to this, and the use as a band name comes through our interest in the occult, and in the links to Crowley etc. It is also something very quintessentially English, that challenges the very same religious doctrines we have metaphorically used within our lyrics.

4. Your album is of conceptual nature; could you explain it and tell us about its elaboration?
You are absolutely correct; the album is indeed conceptual in nature. To me, it is important that albums are about ‘something’. Something real and tangible that is, by rights usually an inherent part of their creators. So I made a decision at the beginning to have a central theme and concept in this album. I despair all the time at albums that are collections of random, unrelated concepts, stories and thoughts as they usually feel forced, or like the artists have nothing good or focused to say, and are only being made for the sake of it.
That in mind this album is about how people are becoming more aware of the goings on in the world and as a whole are starting to becoming more questioning, more enlightened and less ‘suppressible’ than they have been throughout man’s history. The album uses the metaphor of religious belief being challenged by people who have blindly followed doctrines and dogmatic rules for too long as a means of informing people that they should continue to realise what is going on in the world. With their being ever more PR/Spin and lies in everything we as people see, read and hear then it was and indeed is important to us to be able to challenge people to look outside of their cosy, enclosed lives and think about what is actually occurring in the world, and help to make a change to that.

5. We can find a famous guest musician (Grutle Kjelson, from Enslaved) on your first album, how did you manage that? Are you fans of Enslaved's music?
JD who engineered the album is good friends with the guys from Enslaved and showed them some of the recordings we had been doing, and asked him if he would like to contribute. As fans, as well as artists of extreme metal, this was something special for this album and I think he has done an excellent job on the track in which he joins me on vocals. His recognisable and defined style adds a twisted and unique dynamic to a song which for me was already a highlight of the album. I would suggest hearing it in situ for the full effect.
As for being fans of Enslaved’s music; absolutely we are. They are one of the most important extreme bands in recent times. Albums such as ‘Ruun’, ‘Below the Lights’ and ‘Frost’ are all personal favourites. You cannot argue with a band like them who have always continued to innovate in everything they do. Truly inspirational figures!

6. The cover of your first album is quite puzzling, what does it represent? What does it mean?
The cover, much like the ‘image’ of the band presents no clue to the listener about what they are to find within the album, or who is involved.
As I mentioned before, if you have no point of reference for what you have in your hands, other than what is in front of you, then you have to judge it for what it is and what it means to you. This is something than many bands choose to steer clear of, by trying to stick to the ‘rules’ of their particular genre. But it is something important for helping you find your own way with an album. With that in mind, I would perhaps ask you the question… What did it represent to you?

7. Have you already got some plans for the future; a European tour perhaps?
We have no imminent touring plans. This may change if the right things come along, but for now we have the new album ‘…On the Coming of Darkness’ coming out on Candlelight Records in early October 2011. We are also working on a second album and are continuing to write for that.

8. Where does your inspiration come from?
Our inspiration comes from having something to say, and the need to create a medium from which to present that to others. Whether it is a musical or a lyrical idea that comes first, the end result is an album whose inspiration comes from the need to challenge people to look at themselves and try to relate to the ideas we are putting forward, in whatever that manifests itself for each individual.

9. What do you think about the British extreme musical scene? Is there a jewel you can recommend?
There are many jewels in the British/English extreme musical crown….

Wodensthrone – ‘Loss’
Fyrdsman – 'Forgotten Beneath The Soil’
Fen – ‘Epoch’
Winterfylleth – ‘The Mercian Sphere’
Falloch – ‘Where Distant Spirits Remain’
Dragged Into Sunlight – ‘Hatred For Mankind’

To name but a few! I would suggest going and digging deeper into the goings on in the British Isles, to truly find some great extreme music going on.
