Hello! Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us what you are doing as booker?
Hi, name is Stephan Thanscheidt and I am the Managing Director of FKP SCORPIO and also responsible for the festivalbooking of all the festivals we do, so as the wonderful Greenfield Festival in Interlaken, Switzerland.
Let's speak about the booking, how did you make your selection, from which moment is it final and are there last-minute choices?
There are very different parameters, which leads to the booking of an act: Is it a good live act? Does it fit to the festival and the audience? Is there a new record coming? How money people draws the act on a headline tour? Is there any special story to tell? If there´s a positive feeling, after answering these questions, you´re good to proceed and try to book the act. The bookings are done very early nowadays for many reasons, which means, that there are normally no last-minute-choices, only when some act cancels.
You certainly have artists you would have liked to add to your "dream" wishlist. If yes, which one(s)?
We had so many great acts in the last years, but I would love to present Rage Against The Machine somewhen in the future. Unfortunately we already know, that it won´t happen in 2017, but we keep trying...
What is your answer to the remarks which note that the booking of Greenfield is very alike from one year to the next?
We never do a band two years in row, but when great bands make great new records, we will invite them again. We also book with a close look at the wish-list of our visitors.
Is there, without quoting them necessarily, bands you have blacklisted of the booking?
No, normally all the bands are very nice and professional, when they play our festivals. The times of the big "rock star stories" are pretty much over. Whenever, we have problems, which is really rare, we talk and find a solution.
How do you manage the last-minute cancellations if the cancellation comes from the band or if it comes from unpredictable elements as the weather?
It always depends on what "last minute" really means. If it happens a week before, you might have the chance to find another good act. If the cancellation happens a day before or earlier on the day of the show, you can only try to find a good local act, who is willing to play the open slot. If it happens one or two hours before, when the bus of the band has a problem or anything like that, you can only cancel the slot. Whatever it is, it´s important to communicate it as early as possible and very honest to our visitors on the festival.
What musical advices would you give to the festival-goers for this new edition?
There is a great variety of acts from all parts of the rock universe. I am looking forward to see our headliners like the RHCP, Volbeat, The Prodigy, but also great acts like NOFX, The Hives and The Dropkick Murphys. We also have a lot of younger very talented acts, which are really worth to check them out. In addition to that, there´s a new third stage, which will present a great selection of acts from the darker gothic world for the first time.
And finally, what was your biggest memory of the Greenfield, as spectator?
Oh, there were so many great remarkable shows in the last decade of the festival. From the younger past, I will always remember talking to Lemmy from Motörhead after their show 2015 for a while. He was not really the loud rock n´roll maniac anymore - he was very thankful, warmhearted and gentle. Maybe one of the best and most impressive moments I had at Greenfield. R.I.P. Lemmy.
