roseHi, can I start by asking you to introduce yourself and your band ?

I’m Luke and I play drums for Since the Flood.

When did you first start playing together ?

We’ve been playing together with roughly the same lineup for about 4 years now.

How did you meet the other guys of your band ?

Chuck and Dave are from the same area and had both been looking to start a band so they hooked up with some other local guys. Rob and I met the other guys at some shows a few times and we had seen them play a number of times. It turned out that they were looked for a rhythm section, so we tried out, and here we are now.

Which bands have influenced you in the beginning and made you want to play music ?

I listened to tons of different music growing up, both good and bad…haha. I was into mainstream music for the most part when I was younger because I was from a small town and that’s all I really had access to…Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots…that sort of stuff is what got me into music.

since the flood

Have some of your current bandmates played with some other bands in the past or are some involved with other bands now ? If some are, can you tell me with which bands ?

We’ve all played in crappy bands before STF, but it’s nothing we’re proud of.
Dave plays in two side projects; Resist, which is a straight up hardcore band, and Buckhunter, which is a metal band in the same vein as Down. Chuck is working on a side project called The Loss right now. They’re still writing, but from what I’ve heard, it’s really good stuff.

If you had to choose only one song of "Since the Flood", I mean the song that would represent you the best for people who have no idea of who you are...... which song would you select ? And why ?

The song that most people know and tends to reflect us the most is probably Valor and Vengeance. It’s interesting because that’s the last song we wrote for the first album and sort of hinted at what we’d end up becoming on “No Compromise.”
As far as my personal favourite song, it would have to be “At the End” on “No Compromise.”

Can you tell us more about the name you have chosen : "Since the Flood" ?
Does this name have a particular meaning ?

Basically, Dave found a journal from a WWI (First World War) soldier at a flea market in New Hampshire and it had the phrase “since the flood” in it. He thought it sounded cool and decided to name the band that.

Being from Boston can you tell us more about the alternative scene there ?

Boston, and Massachussets in general have a huge hardcore scene right now. There are at least two shows a week in the area and usually they do extremely well. In the past two weeks or so, we had Terror, The Red Chord, Since the Flood, Hope Conspiracy, and Guns Up all on different shows and they all did amazing!

since the flood

Here in Europe, we perceive the Boston HxC scene as being quite wild and violent. Mostly because of the movie "Boston Beatdown", which you have probably seen. What is your opinion about it?

It’s definitely an interesting film. You have to take it for what it is; a documentary of Boston hardcore and the violence that is there. Not everything is like that all the time. There’s definitely violence in hardcore, it’s just the nature of aggressive music. But you’d be surprised to find that the same people that made that video are the ones stopping fights and maintaining the peace at hardcore shows in the area.

So, you have left "Ironclad Records" after having released "Valor and Vengeance" to join   "Metalblade Records". How did you get in touch with “Metalblade” ?
And why did you sign up with them ?

We actually dealt with Metalblade before, because Ironclad has distribution through them, which allowed us to start a relationship with them before we actually got signed. Through all of our touring, we had played in front of them many times out in California. They decided that they wanted to sign us and they bought out our contract with Ironclad.

What can people expect from your new album "No compromise" which will be released in February on Metalblade Records ?

It’s a hard, fast, angry record. If you like hardcore, you will definitely enjoy it.
There’s no frills, just angry music.

What are the main subjects you are talking about in your lyrics ?

Chuck writes all the lyrics, so I can’t comment to much about it, but I do know that he writes from personal experience. It seems to me that that’s the reason so many people can relate to our songs; there’s nothing fictional about it, it’s all about real life.

Can you explain your personal meaning of the artwork you have chosen on your album cover " No Compromise" ?

Basically, we had already titled the album and Kevin decided that Lady Justice was the sort of strong imagery that we wanted to project on this record. It’s just a tie in to the title and is basically saying that we’re going to live our lives on our own terms.

since the flood

You recorded "No Compromise" with Jim Siegel. How was the recording ?

Jim was amazing. I think he’s one of the most underrated engineer/producers in the world. He has a really amazing set of ears and just really understands how to engineer hardcore. You can hear for yourself…the album sounds amazing.

Are you satisfied with the result ?

Absolutely. We couldn’t be happier with the sound of the record.

What are your projects for this year ?

We’ll be going out with Madball in the Northeast of the US in the end of February, then we’ll be hitting the road with Ramallah and Seventh Star in March and April all over the states. We’re hoping to be back overseas in Europe in the spring sometime !

And what do you think about the european HxC scene ?
What are the differences between the european and the american scenes ?

It varies everywhere you go, but it seems like Europeans have a lot more passion for bands and they treat them with a lot more respect. We’ve never been treated as well as when we were in Europe.

Do you know any good european bands ? If you do, which are the ones you like best ?

Entombed rules. So does Born from Pain.

And just for fun, what are your current top 5 records ?

Dropkick Murphy’s – Do or Die
Madball- Legacy
Comeback Kid-Wake the Dead
Behemoth-Demigod
Converge-No Heroes
