Hi, can I start by asking you to introduce yourself and your band ?I’m Luke and I play drums for Since the Flood.
We’ve been playing together with roughly the same lineup for about 4 years now.
Chuck and Dave are from the same area and had both been looking to start a band so they hooked up with some other local guys. Rob and I met the other guys at some shows a few times and we had seen them play a number of times. It turned out that they were looked for a rhythm section, so we tried out, and here we are now.
I listened to tons of different music growing up, both good and bad…haha. I was into mainstream music for the most part when I was younger because I was from a small town and that’s all I really had access to…Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots…that sort of stuff is what got me into music.
We’ve all played in crappy bands before STF, but it’s nothing we’re proud of.
Dave plays in two side projects; Resist, which is a straight up hardcore band, and Buckhunter, which is a metal band in the same vein as Down. Chuck is working on a side project called The Loss right now. They’re still writing, but from what I’ve heard, it’s really good stuff.
The song that most people know and tends to reflect us the most is probably Valor and Vengeance. It’s interesting because that’s the last song we wrote for the first album and sort of hinted at what we’d end up becoming on “No Compromise.”
As far as my personal favourite song, it would have to be “At the End” on “No Compromise.”
Basically, Dave found a journal from a WWI (First World War) soldier at a flea market in New Hampshire and it had the phrase “since the flood” in it. He thought it sounded cool and decided to name the band that.
Boston, and Massachussets in general have a huge hardcore scene right now. There are at least two shows a week in the area and usually they do extremely well. In the past two weeks or so, we had Terror, The Red Chord, Since the Flood, Hope Conspiracy, and Guns Up all on different shows and they all did amazing!
It’s definitely an interesting film. You have to take it for what it is; a documentary of Boston hardcore and the violence that is there. Not everything is like that all the time. There’s definitely violence in hardcore, it’s just the nature of aggressive music. But you’d be surprised to find that the same people that made that video are the ones stopping fights and maintaining the peace at hardcore shows in the area.
We actually dealt with Metalblade before, because Ironclad has distribution through them, which allowed us to start a relationship with them before we actually got signed. Through all of our touring, we had played in front of them many times out in California. They decided that they wanted to sign us and they bought out our contract with Ironclad.
It’s a hard, fast, angry record. If you like hardcore, you will definitely enjoy it.
There’s no frills, just angry music.
Chuck writes all the lyrics, so I can’t comment to much about it, but I do know that he writes from personal experience. It seems to me that that’s the reason so many people can relate to our songs; there’s nothing fictional about it, it’s all about real life.
Basically, we had already titled the album and Kevin decided that Lady Justice was the sort of strong imagery that we wanted to project on this record. It’s just a tie in to the title and is basically saying that we’re going to live our lives on our own terms.
Jim was amazing. I think he’s one of the most underrated engineer/producers in the world. He has a really amazing set of ears and just really understands how to engineer hardcore. You can hear for yourself…the album sounds amazing.
Absolutely. We couldn’t be happier with the sound of the record.
We’ll be going out with Madball in the Northeast of the US in the end of February, then we’ll be hitting the road with Ramallah and Seventh Star in March and April all over the states. We’re hoping to be back overseas in Europe in the spring sometime !
It varies everywhere you go, but it seems like Europeans have a lot more passion for bands and they treat them with a lot more respect. We’ve never been treated as well as when we were in Europe.
Entombed rules. So does Born from Pain.
Dropkick Murphy’s – Do or Die
