The Retaliation Process is not very well known in Switzerland, can you introduce the members of the band to the skartnak readers?
Jury : Yes, for sure. First of all, we´re a groovy and well oiled modern Metal machine from Hamburg. Each of us is a part of our scene for years. Our newest member Sascha played in the Hamburg - Hardcore institution “This Belief” and in “Meguro”, which had more a “Meshuggah” - approach. Singer/Growler Christoph plays, beside of being a part of TRP, in the death-grind Band “Irate Architect”, bass-player Micha, me and our drummer Andre where part of “Nayled” before we formed TRP and myself had a black-death metal band called Mephistopheles a few years ago. So, as you can read, there are a lot of influences that come together for the TRP-Sound. Now, for all of us, “The Retaliation Process” has the top priority.
The band is quite young because you formed it early 2008. However, I’m impressed by the maturity and the professionalism of “Downfall”, as well in the sound than in the composition process. Is The Retaliation Process a full time job for some of the members?
Jury : Yeah, like I described, we´ve done different things music-wise. But at this state, it´s simply not possible to run it full time. It´s underground stuff, because it´s metal music and within the last few years, the music business changed so much, f.e. because of the download thing and many labels died, so sadly it´s nearly impossible to earn enough money to life from it if you want to have a save live.
But even if it´s not our day job, we do the music as professional as possible, because it´s our passion and it only deserve and we only accept the best result when we think about performance, production and music. We simply love what we do, and on the other hand, as a musician you have a lot of freedom if you´re not in the situation to earn money with it, which can cause a lot of pressure, so we don´t worry about that.
You say that you mix a lot of styles to create a “grooving modern metal with some rocking parts”. I actually love this album for his groove and his perfect balance between melodies and brutality. Can you tell what bands are your major influences? Do you think that the groove feeling and the speed is the most important thing to have for a metal band to distinguish from another?
Jury : That´s nice to hear, thank you! I don´t know, there are many ways to distinguish from other bands and styles. For us it´s really easy, this music comes from our heart and we don´t think about how to sound. For me as guitarist, I love really outstanding guitar harmonies, but i also love to create bad ass riffs which sound heavy as hell. It´s very inspiring to mix those different approaches, you get a very wide range of expression if you spend some time to create the right dose of brutality and melody. I like to play with contrasts without endangering the flow. For me, that´s the best way to work for a meaningful scaffold for my band to make it even more better.
The only aim for us is, that we don´t want to be the fastest or most technical band of the planet. I don´t understand those mostly young bands that only try to sound as extreme and fast as possible. If you ask me, it´s childish self purpose. We´re technical sometimes, yes, but first, we´re more inspired from brilliant and groovy bands like Entombed, Slayer, Machine Head, Carcass or Katatonia, even if we don´t sound exactly like them. But these bands are good examples that it´s possible to be a really outstanding songwriter while sounding absolutely heavy. Many tones doesn´t makes a better song.
To my mind, I feel that the german metal/metalcore scene is a bit tired these last years. What do you think about the scene today? Do you think that the Germany needs a second breath to continue involving in the genre?
Jury : Hmm...I think our scene is doing well. But we probably don´t have “the next big think” to offer, because there is no money for promotion or reduced interest in building up bands from Germany. Heaven Shall Burn are or could be the next big thing maybe... But that´s more a business matter, because there are enough excellent underground bands around like Aeons Confer, Dark Age, Drone, Disbelief, Negator or Undertow, just to name a few. But I´m not so much involved in Metalcore...
What are your ambitions for the future? Do you think that “Downfall” will give you the opportunity to tour all around Europe now and not only in Germany?
Jury : I hope. Everybody who want to book us can write us a message at the Myspace, or to theretaliationprocess@gmx.de and we will figure it out. We´ll played in Aarhus/Denmark and that was a chance! So just give us a call!
Germany is well known for his big summer festivals, like Wacken, Summerbreeze or With Full Force. What do you think about them? Would you like to play in some of them?
Jury : Yes, for sure we would love to play those shows, every band would kill for it. We´re attending the Wacken Open Air every year as fans! I always enjoy those big festivals, the parties are always a blast. But it´s not easy for a small band like us to get a stage slot there.
Mostly the bigger labels and booking agencies are fighting, trading and dealing with their own bands for the desired slots and tours. It mostly works like: “Get our small band to the festival billing and you get the big band you´ve asked for”. Even if it´s not working in this way, it´s for sure a small circle of business people and you need the right contacts, but that´s the way it goes everywhere. We hopefully will find good business partner within the next years and with our upcoming releases. For now, it´s all DIY, but it´s ok and we also like it in many ways. Like you´ve said we´re a new band and as it is, those bands have to fight for their rights and respect ;-).
What bands would you die for to play with?
Jury : Like always: Entombed with the Wolverine Blues line up. My heroes forever.
Switzerland is not very far from Hamburg. Have you already played in Switzerland, or did you play with some swiss bands? What do you think of the swiss metal scene?
Jury : No, we don´t had the possibility yet. I like Samael a lot, especially their “Passage” record. One of the best records of all time. You also had a really cool death metal band back the days, Sickening Gore. Loved that album as I was a kid and still do!
A word about the lyrics now, what are the main themes of your songs when you write?
Jury : About everything in live. Mostly we´re writing about the negative side that affects us, like falseness of some people, white collar crime, the greed of humanity, social wrongs or private dark chapters that we had to face and which hit us hard as human beings. It´s also about fighting back against the things and circumstances which try to hinder you to evolve the way you want. There are no rules about which themes we want to write. Maybe we won´t write about the hottest chicks we ever meet or this spikes, leather and dragon stuff, HaHa...that won´t fit in our style I guess, even if I like Motley Crüe a lot ;-).
What does mean the name of the band to you?
Jury : First, it sounds good even if the name is a little bit complicated to remember... (ndlr : I made the mistake myself when I was writing The Retalition Project instead of Process in the review) it´s a metaphor for fighting and standing up if someone or something has beat you to the ground. It´s the spirit of holding your own live in your hands and don´t let it overtaken by anyone. It´s about freedom and renewal and the sum of our lyrics, so to speak.
Finally, a word to finish this interview?
Jury : We really appreciate your support and hope that the readers will give our “Downfall” record a try. You can buy it at Amazon, EMP, ITunes and hopefully at your local store.
Thank you all!
